Pushing the Right Buttons
By Susan Mercedes. Filed in Life |I am no computer whiz. In fact, I thrive on other people helping me with technology. Well I’ve got a piece of advice for all you techies who help inept computer people like me.
Rewrite the glossary. Change your language. Do something.
There have been tons of times when my computer has problems. What does my tech support tell me to do? Reboot. WTF! Because when you tell me to reboot, I have yet to see that word. Anywhere. I have searched my entire fucking keyboard and everywhere on the menu to find the reboot button and have had no luck. There is no such fucking thing. No fucking button to push.
What does reboot mean? Restart. Shut down. Sleep. Log out. Those are my choices. Use one of those words.
That is like telling a new teenage driver to put the car in “stay” instead of park or shift it to “backwards” instead of reverse. Or it’s like asking a culinary student to smolder the stew instead of simmer it.
Anyhow, I had to vent. That was bugging me. For like 4 years. Now I’ve moved on. Thanks.

Susan,
I read this and it made me chuckle. So I decided to give you a quick reply.
Here is your answer to re-boot: Turn off computer and restart! You will preferably want to do this through your start menu in windows… however, if your software/windows is “hanging” (non responsive) you can always do a “Hard Reboot” by finding your power button, depress and hold until your machine turns off. Let the hard drive stop spinning for a good 20 seconds or so, then re-start your computer. Wa la, you have just successfully “re-booted” your machine.
If all else fails, go to gateway, find the Apple store, and buy a Mac! (need to take that advice myself!)
Anyway… not sure if you were actually looking for definition, but hey, always wanted to reply on your blog… so here you go!
Have a great weekend!

Doc (Darin): Your reply cracked me up. Please don’t limit your replies to my geeky computer problem post…since there are so few.
LUCKILY, I use a Mac at home. Rebooting, or restarting if you’re looking for the button, has never needed to be done. However, in the office my PC needs a kick in the ass several times a month.
Btw, your answer was really helpful. Thanks.

Funny, when I hear reboot and I want to go put my boots back on. Inconvenient in the summer. #justsayin

Just for the record, whenever I have to call the IT guys at my work and they tell me to “reboot,” I just wait a few minutes, doing nothing, and then go, “Okay, it’s back up now.” I NEVER reboot when they tell me to, mainly because it’s a load of crap and never works to fix a problem. All my times doing this, they believed me and moved on to fix the problem and actually DO fix it without me having to close out all my programs and reboot.
