Wino Wednesday: Vodka is the New Wine

This Wino Wednesday post was inspired by vodka. Vanilla vodka. I realize this isn’t wine, but I do have to expand my liver’s experience. And vodka does give me the same end result wine does…a lovely buzz.

Vodka is my new favorite. Here are several reasons why:

  1. It comes trainer recommended. My trainer tells me it’s healthiest to drink hard liquor versus wine or beer. Must be the calories or carbs or something. I don’t care. I just love that my trainer tells me what to drink.
  2. It tastes fabulous. Right now the vanilla flavor rocks my world. If they only came out with coconut flavoring, I would give up sex for…wait, that’s not true. But I would love that delicious flavor.
  3. It mixes with anything and everything. Vodka goes well with so much. Like a glass and some ice.  Or peach Fresca. Or diet coke. Or 10 calorie Vitamin Water. Or soda water and a lemon wedge. Or served straight up with three olives.
  4. It doesn’t give you bad breath. Mostly because it doesn’t have an overwhelming smell. Think about when you’re talking to someone who has been drinking beer. You can totally smell it on their breath. Not with vodka. Problem solved without needing a stick of gum.
  5. It travels well. One word: flask. This is possible because it is potent enough to use in small doses. It takes far too much wine to get a buzz. I can’t find a flask big enough to fit all the wine yet small enough to fit in my pants.
  6. It doesn’t stain. You know how many outfits I’ve ruined because of red wine. With vodka you can twirl your glass around and not fret if the liquid splashes on your shirt/skirt/carpet/dashboard.
  7. It can be stored anywhere. It can be kept at room temperature. It can be left in the fridge. Or it can be put in the freezer. Hell, you can even leave a bottle in the trunk of your car. Well, I heard you can.

What’s your favorite alcohol and why?

Welcome to my world! :) I’ve always loved the wine, but never more so than that precious resource we know as vodka. I like to keep a couple 20oz bottles of Diet Sprite on hand. That way, when a fun activity comes up like partying, tanning, ball games, shopping, hiking, swimming, driving, etc. you’ll be prepared. Simply pour out 1/4 – 1/2 the bottle of Diet Sprite, fill to the top with vodka, refridgerate, and enjoy the delicious beverage for the girl-on-the-go! For a way delcious summery treat, fill a tumbler up with ice, squeeze half of a lime into the glass, fill 1/4-1/2 way full with Stoli Grape Vodka and top off with Diet Sprite. It tastes exactly like a Lime Ricky. Enjoy!

ColbyUtah: I’m putting Diet Sprite on my grocery list. (Sadly, that list is mostly liquids.) I was sold when you said, “enjoy the delicious beverage for the girl-on-the-go!” Damn, now I’m super thirsty.

  2. Comment by Summer:

I love vodka! Definitely my hard alcohol of choice. Lately my at home beverage has been grape vodka with diet cran-raspberry juice and not just because that is all I have, it’s actually very good. Over the weekend I had a few vodka tonics and man, I forgot just how refreshingly good those are! I’ve never really gotten into the vanilla vodka though.

Summer: I’ve never had grape vodka. GASP! Must try soon. When’s your next party?

  3. Comment by Laura:

Oh my. You know I love my vodka. My current faves are: vodka tonics, “Diet Coke” at the derby or The Dodo, vodka + 10 Cal (which you so graciously mentioned), and let’s not forget vanilla vodka + soda + Fresca. That is heaven. I love it for all of the same reasons you do – it’s discreet, it travels well, but best of all – it doesn’t leave me feel completely useless the next day.

    Vodka = happiness.

Laura: I definitely know your love for the clear liquid goodness. And yes, vodka = happiness! That’s profound, my friend.

  4. Comment by Erin:

5 o’clock did me in. Ruined me to vodka. Damn college and Star of Death drinking game. But I did make a rosemary vodka martini the other night to see if I could take it, and it was pretty good. Easy, too. But not as easy as Ten High straight from the jug.

    Susan Mercedes Reply:

Erin: When will you share this Ten High with me? I say we plan a time at Hog Wallow for Ten High this summer. You game?

  5. Comment by Eric Hamilton:

I prefer rum over vodka – and they make it in coconut. And vanilla. It has most of the same great qualities vodka has, but I think it goes better with soda and chocolate – two of my favorite mixers. Remind me to make you one of my chocolate martinis some time. ;)

    Susan Mercedes Reply:

Eric: Yum…chocolate martini! I like rum, especially the coconut flavored type. Seriously, try it in hot chocolate during a huge snow storm in front of the fire. That is a slice of heaven and one of my favorite wintertime treats.

  6. Comment by Amberly:

I’m loving ColbyUtah’s advice, I’ve gotta try that! I currently was gifted a giant bottle of vodka as a thank you for wearing a hideous dress as a bridesmaid in a wedding so now I’ve got a way to put it to good use. As for my favorites: I’ll never get over California Burgundy wine (though I hear it’s incredibly fattening….not that that’s ever stopped me) and my all new favorite is Mojito’s! Didn’t have one until last week, but now I’m in love.

    Susan Mercedes Reply:

Amberly: Doesn’t that sound yummy. And practical. And with your giant bottle of vodka, you need to buy a ton of Diet Sprite. Or just invite me over. ;-)
