Long Goodbyes

Today is a special day. It’s my grandma’s birthday. She’s 92.

About 5 years ago I took my daughter, Elle, to visit her for a week. She lives in Pennsylvania. It was so fun. My mom was there too. It was four generations of us girls. All with the same energy and enthusiasm. We must drive people crazy.

Being Grandma’s birthday today, I naturally called her to wish her a wonderful day. We stayed on the phone for 15 minutes chatting. But what I will always think of when I think of my Grandma are her goodbyes. They last forever. In a sweet, loving way. This is how our 15 minute conversation turned into 17 minutes:

Me: Grandma, enjoy the rest of your birthday. I love you.

Grandma: Thank you darling. All my love to you.

Me: Thanks grandma. I love you.

Grandma: You’re wonderful darling. You are so beautiful. And your daughter is so beautiful.

Me: Okay Grandma, I love you. Good bye.

Grandma: Okay sweetheart. You’re a doll. Take care. I love you sweetness. Be good. And give Elle a kiss for me. Goodbye darling. I love you….

If only I can have 1/2 the energy she does when I turn 38. And a fraction of the love she shares. Amazing! She is my hero.

I hope I live to be 92. I’ll SO find ways to drag out those goodbyes.

Erin: Just be sure to throw in a lot of “darlings” and “sweeties” into the farewell. It makes it so much cuter.

It’s good to hear you already appreciate stuff like this. Most people don’t appreciate them until the person’s already dead. And I’m glad your Grandma’s your hero, I felt/feel the same way about mine! Grandma’s rock. I think we’ll grow up to be really cool Grandma’s, ha ha ha.

Amberly: In order for me to be a Grandma, my kid has to have one. Not a chance. At least not in the next couple of decades. I hope! ;)

Here’s an email I just got from my mom, aka Mumsie, regarding this post:

    You are ADORABLE!
    Love,
    Mumsie

The post is about her mom. See…the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I love my family with super big heart.
